2008 Championship Round 1
Butter Cup Farm Chatteris
27th Jan 2008
Peterborough Junior Motocross Club kicked off the season with the first round of their club championship at the weekend. Despite heavy rainfall in the previous weeks the track had been prepared to a fantastic standard by the usual unsung heroes !! The bikes were coming in clean but a few “soft” corners gave way to some monster ruts, making for some challenging and exciting racing.
All the autos did brilliantly well, in fact some virtually disappeared in some of the ruts! Ben Kind put on a first class display collecting the first maximum of the day. Luke Everitt rode smoothly with three very comfortable second place rides .He was followed home by Sam Curtis for third. A quick mention for the only girl in the group, Kathryn Booth he took a well deserved fourth place.
In the Junior 65 Alfie Bowtell stepped up to the plate with three stylish wins and the overall victory. Jacob Warner narrowly beat Austin Eary for second overall after they tied on points, Jacob getting the result courtesy of a better last race finish. Jamie Cox and Jack Baldiwin finished fourth and fifth respectively, both getting a third place finish at some point in the day.
In the Small Wheel 85’s Max Hind set the pace with the hole shot in every race. He won the first two races despite pressure from a flying George Hunter. Every one thought George had won the second race after nipping around Max on the last but one corner, but Max hit the whoops section flat out on the final straight to take him back for the win! Like many others Max Targett hit the deck in several times in the day, but made up for it in the last race with a convincing win and pipping Mason Law for third overall after he hit the deck in the final race along with George and Max H.
There was some great racing in the Big Wheel 85’s throughout the day. Aaron Edwards was robbed of the first race win by a bike seizure. Jordan Hind inherited the lead and stayed there to take the first race win. In the second race Daley Coldron set the pace closely followed by Jordan, who slowly reeled him in eventually passing for a second win. Daley took the last race after another epic duel with Jordan. Luke Houghton’s consistency earned him third overall despite burying himself in a deep rut in the first race!! Rob Nicoll and Jordan Jugg also put in sterling performances for fourth and fifth on the day.
In the Youth 125 newly upgraded Billy King must have had some thing special for his breakfast!! He was on fire and unbeatable all day taking his first ever overall win. There was little to separate the top ten in this class, with consistency being the key to a top six finish. Declan Burke took second overall with Phillip Gray in third.
Rob Flaherty started the day off well in the adults, taking the holeshot and leading for much of the first race. Kev Lancaster eventually managed to overhaul him for the win with Mark Rudd finishing third. In the second race Kev Lancaster went down on the first corner and Steve Worts, who had a nightmare in race one, took the win with Rob taking second again. In the third race Steve Worts won again, but this was only enough for second overall as Kev Lancaster’s consistency earned him top spot on the day. Rob Flaherty and Mark Rudd both had a DNF each dropping them down the placings. This meant Simon Sparrow took the last place on the podium with three solid rides. A quick mention for Scott Howlett who finished an impressive 8th place in his first ride in the adult group.
